Description
Red Cow (also referred as to Red Heifer or Parah Adumah) – The subject matter of this painting has to do with the special purification ritual, prescribed in the Torah (Old Testament, Numbers 19) and not widely known, except among very religious Jews and Christian fundamentalists (The ritual, first performed by Moses, and then, eight more times since, raises some cardinal issues and questions, which cant be fully explained by our rationality.) While I personally, do not belong to either category, after hearing this story for the first time a year ago, its symbolism, mystery and deep philosophical meaning, captured my imagination: I found it fascinating.
Without going into lengthy descriptions, I suggest to all 'inquiring minds' out there to google it and read up some stuff on the subject (there is a lot of available material).
This painting is large (approx., 48x72) and is done in my trademark technique (Stained Glass on Canvas), which utilizes acrylic paints and relief outliner, so, technically, it could be labeled as mixed media. Obviously, the painting is allegoric and its references to the real places and objects/ hallmarks are purely symbolic. As such, the composition is made up of three connected parts: Jerusalem and the Wailing Wall (e.g. the past) on the left, the resurrected Temple (e.g. the future) on the right, and NYC/ Wall St. (e.g. the present) in the middle (the bull statue, which actually exists: it represents the greedy vitality of the bull market and can be viewed as a symbol of the Golden Calf in our modern times. The red cow (heifer) above is holding symbolic broom, ready to clean up the mess he had made and purify us with fire, blood and water.
I think that this painting is not meant for a private residence, but should be displayed at some public place (academic, religious or cultural).
